Handyman and junk removal are the two most underpriced home service categories. Clients think they are paying for an hour of work. They are actually paying for: drive time, the truck, the tools, your expertise, your insurance, your gas, your time quoting, and the 30% of jobs that turn out to be more than you expected.
This guide is for solo home service operators who want to stop undercharging without losing jobs. We will cover hourly versus flat rate, minimum trip charges, materials markup, and how to quote in under 10 minutes.
Throughout this guide we reference HandyQuote Pro — the home services app in our suite. Single-file HTML, offline-capable, runs in any browser. The full list of home services apps lives at creatif.tools/home-services/.
The Real Cost of An Hour of Work
Your hourly rate needs to cover more than your time. Here is the stack.
- Drive time If 30% of your day is driving, charge 30% more per billable hour OR tighten your route.
- The truck $30K to $60K for a service van. $0.50 to $1.50 per job in fuel. Tools inside: $10K to $20K.
- Insurance Liability $1,200 to $2,400 per year. Do not operate without liability.
- Quoting time Each quote takes 15 to 45 minutes. 10 quotes per week times 30 minutes equals 5 hours unbilled.
- Materials markup Charge 30 to 50% over what you paid for materials. Clients expect this.
Hourly vs Flat Rate: Pick Per Job Type
There is no single right answer. Pick by job type.
- Hourly works for Troubleshooting, first-time clients, jobs with unknown scope.
- Flat rate works for Repeat jobs (TV mounting, fence repair), standard scopes, anything where you can define the work upfront.
- Minimum trip charge Always have one. Solo operators: $80 to $150 minimum.
- When to walk away A job that will not cover the trip charge plus 1 hour of work, with the client trying to negotiate.
Junk Removal Pricing: The Volume Game
Junk removal is NOT hours-based. It is volume-based.
- The standard 6-tier model Single item to full truck load, ranging $80 to $900.
- Why volume, not weight Heavy junk fills the truck faster. Volume pricing captures this.
- Add-on fees that matter Stairs ($25 to $50 per flight). Hazardous materials. Same-day or next-day service premium.
- JunkQuote Pro walks you through Pick the tier, add the add-ons, snap a few photos, send the PDF quote. 10 minutes max.
Materials Markup: Charging for What You Bring
If you show up with materials, those materials have a markup. Full stop.
- Standard markup 30 to 50% over what you paid. Never less than 25%.
- Why clients accept it They do not want to source materials, drive to the store, and hope they got the right thing.
- When NOT to add markup Customer-supplied materials. Bulk orders they specifically asked you to pick up.
- Example markup math $8 toggle switch at Home Depot. Charge $12. The markup covers your time sourcing plus your expertise.
